American Campground was built in 1961 to accommodate workers building the Amistad Dam. American Campground boasts one of the oldest and deepest wells drilled directly into the Edwards Aquifer, which provided the massive amounts of water needed to mix some 120,000,000 cubic yards of concrete, used to construct the Amistad Dam. 
Located directly across Highway 90 from Blackbrush Point, American Campground is in close proximity to all of  the Lake Amistad National Recreation Area facilities.
